The Spark Magazine - SW England - February '08 "I'd been thinking about having cognitive behaviour therapy when a friend suggested I talk to Nicolya Christi, a professional psychic with three year's psychotherapy training, who is based in Glastonbury. I wondered how Nicolya would combine her psychic gift with her professional training. I'm not entirely comfortable with the idea of past lives, spirit guides or clairvoyance. However, my mother was raised in a Spiritualist church and although I was not, I have always had an awareness and some understanding of this. I talked to Nicolya and she explained that during her training as a psychotherapist it had been completely inappropriate to even acknowledge her psychic gift. She says, however, that she became increasingly aware that she could not stop her clients' deceased loved ones and Spirit guides coming into sessions to help the clients with their own healing process. At that point she moved away from traditional psychotherapy and developed her own unique way of working so that she could be completely honest with her clients about the information she was receiving while working with them. Our sessions took place over the phone, and straight away my fears were completely allayed. She uses a combination of professional coaching and counselling, as well as bringing any clairvoyant or metaphysical guidance that comes to her during the session. Nicolya explained how we would work together and how she would guide me to find the answers out for myself. Then it was over to me to tell about the issues I wanted to concentrate on. No problem there then! She stressed how important it was that I only opened up to her about things at the right time for me. And only follow her suggestions or explore subjects when I felt ready and comfortable to do so. Nicolya creates a real feeling of balance in the relationship between the counsellor and the client. She is very open to talk about herself and her experiences if this is useful. This is a journey you take together and I like this. I have never been comfortable with the idea of imbalance in the 'power and knowledge' relationship between more conventional counsellors and their clients. I enjoy talking to Nicolya and her approach to counselling doesn't make me at all uncomfortable. She has offered me valuable psychological insight that has made me think about the way I speak, behave and react in everyday life. She is giving me useful tools and techniques to help me break old patterns and reach my goals. This can only ever be a good thing. I'm a pretty picky girl but I am really pleased with the progress we are making. I initially signed up for three sessions but Nicolya and I now plan to continue for another six, to be reviewed at the end of that series. I am looking forward to continuing with this therapy". |
